The National Development Bank (NDB) has increased its chess club championship sponsorship from P57, 000 to P60, 000 for a tournament that kicks off tomorrow and ends on Sunday at Oasis Motel in Tlokweng.

Speaking during the sponsorship launch on Wednesday, NDB head of marketing, Harry Marks said they have forged a long-term relationship with the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) because of commitment shown by the leadership of the federation.  He said as a sponsor, they believe in developing the sport from grassroots level. He suggested that it was high time chess was included in the schools curriculum as way of promoting talent at a tender age.

Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng said he does not support the idea of winners getting monetary prizes.  He pointed out that money gets used up quickly when compared to prizes in kind.  He observed that a lot of money from the sponsorship is channelled towards prizes.
