Mwanza Gun Down ECCO

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Striker Richard Mwanza buckled ECCO City Greens' sustained march to the Mascom Premier League title when he scored four times as jaded defending champions Police XI gave notice that they are still alive and kicking.

The battle between the outgoing champions and the leading pretenders to the throne ended in a 4-2 disappointment for ECCO fans who travelled all the way from their Francistown base to watch their heroes. The on song Mwanza started tormenting right from kick-off and within minutes he had given Police XI a 1-0 lead. Five minutes after the strike, he rattled ECCO with another goal to make it 2-0. His excessive celebration earned him a caution from referee Joshua Bondo. At recess, Police XI were leading 2-0.

Five minutes from the re-start, Mwanza stunned ECCO again to give the Jungle Kings a 3-0 lead. He beat ECCO left-back and captain Bosarutweng 'Booster' Magola to find the back of the net. After the third goal, ECCO coach Barry Daka reshuffled his rearguard, pushing Mothusi Lesotlho to the flanks and Magola to right back. The trick worked as ECCO responded with two quick goals in 11 minutes. The towering Mandlaenkosi 'Sukunyetsa' Sibanda pounced twice to reduce the deficit to 3-2. From here, it was a season battle with ECCO piling pressure to pull level. But in the 66th minute, Mwanza put the game beyond ECCO's reach when he headed home his fourth goal from a well- taken Duncan Kgopolelo corner kick. The combination of Kgopolelo, Dennis Kaelo, Mwanza, Justin Bwalya and lanky Ditaola Ditaola proved too good for the ECCO defence. Police XI made their intention clear right from the start when they pounced on ECCO like a wounded buffalo. It was clear that Police XI coach Sthandwa Mogwadi had a mission to get even with Daka who has been on top of the log for the better part of the season.
