Concerned: Nkaigwa

The Member of Parliament for Gaborone North, Haskins Nkaigwa has said it is clear that the government through the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) does not care about minority sports.

Nkaigwa told Mmegi Sport after the Tuesday Parliament session that he was not satisfied with the minister’s answer to his question.  Nkaigwa had asked the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng what criteria is used by the BNSC to distribute the sports budget to codes. Nkaigwa had also wanted to know which sport code receives the largest and smallest share as well as the reasons.

Olopeng told Parliament that funds distribution by BNSC depend on priorities for the national sport associations and the amount received from government.  The minister added that the distribution also depends on how the sport association is spread across the country.  Another reason added Olopeng, is the sport association’s involvement with other development structures in the likes of the Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) and Botswana Primary Sport Association (BOPSA).
