Mopako to quit football

One of the most industrious mid-fielders in the First Division Donald 'Coach' Mopako says he will quit football if his club Killer Giants fails to gain promotion to the Mascom Premier League next season.

The much-travelled Mopako has played for Premier League sides Jwaneng Comets, Lobtrans Gunners, BMC, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Township Rollers and Flamengo Santos. For two seasons now, the 30-year-old former youth international has tried to single- handedly lift Killer Giants to the Premier League. The Ramotswa-born star told Mmegi Sport recently that he is disappointed that Killer Giants who were on fire when the season started ran out of steam and finished sixth in the First Division League. He has turned down lucrative offers from Premier League sides including his former club BMC saying his loyalty is with Killer Giants - the outfit that discovered him.
"I would have thought that Killer Giants would be playing in the Premier League by now. It is not that I underestimate other teams in this league but the way we started, if all the players had been putting enough effort we would have done it by now," Mopako said.
When Killer Giants got promoted to the First Division three seasons ago, it was Mopako who played his heart out to make sure the feat is achieved. He hit the target 12 time to lead the Ramotswa side to the First Division. After promotion, Killer Giants carried its good form and surprised many when they edged out established teams to finish at a respectable fourth place. Mopako blames lack of commitment from some of his fellow players for the team's problems. He said that some players used to miss training unnecessarily while others drunk heavily and would not be fit on match day. "I know we win and lose as a team and it does not help to apportion the blame but some of our players have been disappointing. They do not take their football seriously and this affects the whole team," he said.
The one time Zebras' man is hopeful that the club management will take drastic steps to address the problem in the coming season. He conceded that the club is in need of experienced players in various departments if it wants to gain promotion to the Premier League.
"We have too many youngsters in our team and registering more experienced players could help them settle down. We had a problem after I got injured and the goal drought started. We need another experienced striker who will take over," he said. Apart from Mopako, Killer Giants have former Gunners' forward Trevor Moiseraele, though he is likely to join Gaborone United.
