Mopako learns the hard way

Midfielder Donald 'Coach' Mopako learnt the hard way recently that his popularity as a footballer meant little in political circles when he failed to get a ruling party ticket to contest a council seat in next year's general elections.

Mopako presumed that most people at Siga where he stars for local club, Killer Giants would vote for him during the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) primary elections. But this never happened though he is the most popular character at the club. The players, supporters and officials have so much trust in him that at one stage when the club was looking for a coach, he was entrusted with the task of recruitment.

It came as a shock to the 33-year-old former Zebras man that only a few people voted for him at the primaries. He felt betrayed by supporters of Killer Giants and he nearly left to join village rivals Letlapeng who recently got promotion to the First Division South League.
