Montsho aims to defend world title

The 14th World Championships in Athletics takes off in Moscow, Russia, in less than a month and women's 400 metre-world champion, Amantle Montsho has set her focus on defending her title. Montsho had a good start to the year and has already taken the lead in the IAAF Samsung Diamond League with 16 points from five races.

She has won three of her opening races and came second on two occasions.  Speaking to Mmegi Sport from Paris this week, she said she is very satisfied with her performance so far this season and wants to defend her title in Moscow. Montsho ran 49.56 seconds in Daegu, South Korea two years back narrowly beating American Allyson Felix to win the world championship gold and set a personal best. On finishing second in the last two races, she said it does not mean she has slowed down due to burnout. She said she would be in top shape for the championships. "By the world championships, I would have competed in six races just like most of my competitors; so I do not think I can suffer from a burnout," she said. She said her last race in Monaco on September 19, and from there she would remain in Paris to prepare for the championships. The championships start on August 10. Montsho said she decided to withdraw from the London Diamond League race so that she could have a few more days to recover in time for the championship. However, Montsho will face stiff competition from Britain's Christian Ohuruogo, as Olympic gold medallist Sanya-Richards Ross of the United States is unlikely to fully recover in time for the championships. She has been nursing a foot injury that has kept her out of the Diamond League circuit.
