Millions set aside for players' allowances

The government announced on Tuesday that it has availed P30 million to pay allowances for local sportsmen and women. The allowances were mooted early last year when President Ian Khama took power.

The P30 million will be used to pay monthly allowances to sportsmen and women doing duty for national teams. Soccer players in the Premier League, the First Division and the newly introduced constituency leagues for various codes will also benefit from the allowances.

The introduction of the allowances has been a controversial move criticised by the Botswana Football Association (BFA). The association said it needs funds to run its activities instead of paying allowances to players and starting a constituency league.
