Metropolitan set to unveil improved chess deal

Metropolitan Life today unveils sponsorship for the sixth National Chess Championships in Gaborone in what could mark the biggest chess sponsorship in a year the chess body is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

From a mere P15,000 sponsorship when Metropolitan stepped onto the scene six years ago, the companys sponsorship reached the P75, 000 mark last year, and chess enthusiasts are keeping their fingers crossed it might eclipse the P100, 000 mark when Metropolitan presents the cheque this evening.

The Metropolitan Championships kicked off in Gaborone a fortnight ago and the second leg of the qualifiers goes to Francistown this weekend. The competition will see the best 24 men and 18 women battling it out for the top 10 slots to the finals, which will be played during the Easter holidays.
