Mass Media defend Kakapa Cup

Mass Media FC of Botswana retained the annual Kakapa Media Cup when they beat visiting SABC North West 4-2 in an interesting final played at UB Stadium on Saturday.

The victors made it to the final after beating the Botswana Gazette 4-1 in the first semi-final while SABC North West came from behind to force a 1-1 draw and eventually beat Kakapa FC (Mmegi) 4-3 in a penalty shout out. The final started on a high note with both teams showing intentions of securing an early goal. However, it was the state-owned Mass Media that created most scoring opportunities but their strikers were caught offside most of the time. Mass Media banked on home ground advantage and SABC struggled to match them. The choir kept the stadium alive when the going looked tough for Mass Media. The deadlock was broken in the 25th minute when Mass Media caught their opponents' defence napping to take the lead through Batshu Thomba.

However, the game lost momentum after the goal. The players looked tired as the hot afternoon sun took its toll. Nelson Tsakala equalised for SABC in the 35th minute when he easily beat goalkeeper Last Rakgasa. Mass Media responded by launching raids and their efforts paid off in the 40th minute when they got the second goal. The game went on recess with Mass Media leading the visitors 2-1. SABC faded in the second half as their opponents piled pressure and it was no surprise when Thomba got his second goal in the 60th minute. Kabo Nyathi sealed victory 10 minutes later. Collen Lemawana reduced the deficit for SABC in the 78th minute. The tournament was spiced up by entertainment from cultural groups, Dikakapa and Culture Spears. Cellular company Orange Botswana, First National Bank and MedRescue International Botswana sponsored the event.
