Majombolo forced to borrow cash to pay players

SELEBI PHIKWE: Nico United's public relations officer (PRO) Matlhale Malepa says his side is facing a financial crisis which has forced his club to borrow money in order to pay players.

Malepa said it is difficult to pay players who are struggling to make ends meet. "How premier is our Premier League? It should just be called Super league. Premier league clubs should be given grants to be able to pay players," he said. Malepa said they had to borrow money to pay their players. He explained that the P38, 000 that Nico got from the Premier League at the beginning of the season was used to clear debts that the club had accumulated, including players' outstanding salaries.

He said 90 percent of their players depend on football for a living. He said crowd-pullers like Gaborone United (GU) and Mochudi Centre Chiefs are better off because they have good support base and make more money from gate- takings. Malepa said this enables these teams to pay their players.  He said Nico has been playing many away games and that has depleted their coffers. He said the management plans to call a supporters meeting to plot the way forward. Malepa said the club has managed to stay afloat because of BCL Mine's sponsorship. "If it were not for the BCL sponsorship, the club would have long collapsed."
