William Maboane has quit as Extension Gunners' chairman following his dismissal from the Botswana Premier League (BPL) executive committee early this week.

"Yes, I can confirm that Maboane is no longer the chairperson of Gunners. He submitted his resignation letter yesterday (Tuesday)," Gunners' spokesperson, Abdul Kgengwenyane told Mmegi Sport yesterday. In the letter, Maboane is said to have stated that he is resigning to protect the image of Extension Gunners after he was implicated in wrongdoing by the BPL board. Kgengwenyane said the club constitution states that if a chairperson leaves office before the end of his or her term, the vice chairperson will hold fort until the executive committee meets to fill the post. He said the committee will meet tomorrow to chart the way forward. He said they have enjoyed a good working relationship with Maboane during his term as club chairperson. Maboane was elected to lead Gunners in 2011. He has overseen some major changes at the once glamorous Lobatse club. During his tenure, Gunners won its first title, the Coca-Cola Cup in 2011, after close to two decades without any silverware.

The team recently notched a historic technical sponsorship deal worth over P1 million with sportswear manufacturer, All Kasi. Maboane leaves at a time when Gunners is about to embark on a privatisation strategy, having already advertised for interested parties to take over the running of the club. It was believed that privatisation was the only way to improve the fortunes of the club. Efforts to reach him yesterday prove futile as his phone rang unanswered and he did not respond to a text message sent to him.
