Local golfers perform below par at African Youth tourney

Local golfers performed below par during the African Junior Championship played in Gaborone over the Easter holiday.

Botswana Golf Union (BGU) secretary general, Mpho Kelosiwang said despite the poor performance by the local golfers, the tournament was a success. He said as BGU they pride themselves in setting high standard whenever they host tournaments. South Africa won the tournament, with Zimbabwe coming second followed by Namibia.

Botswana finished eighth. "For the first time, Swaziland, Zambia, Kenya and Uganda finished ahead of us. That should not have happened if we played to our plan," he said. Kelosiwang said the juniors played well in the first round, but faltered in the last two. Leroy Pearmain, Nabeel Desai and Tawanda Kapini, who represented Botswana, have been part of BGU three-year development plan. Kelosiwang said Pearmain showed improvement, which proves he is one for the future.  Pearmain finished 15th. Kapini, who was making his debut in the competition,
took part in the juniors' competition. Kelosiwang said the BGU intends to continue improving the skills of the local golfers, hence the holding of monthly training camps with a South African coach. He said the golfers including Unami Molotshwa, a female junior golfer, would also attend training at a golf academy in South Africa during school vacations.  Pearmain said he managed to learn some skills from other golfers especially South Africans. He said some players were affected since it was only their first major competition.
