Local boxers for Indonesia tourney

Local boxers, Botshelo Robby and Ofentse Kompone get a chance to fine-tune their Commonwealth Youth Games preparations when they participate in the 21st President's Cup International Boxing Tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia from Saturday.

The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Federation (Pertina) is hosting the competition after a seven-year hiatus. Boxers from 30 countries, including three Indian teams - Garuda, Elang and Rajawali are expected to take part in the revived tournament. Kompone and Robby are already in camp preparing for the prestigious tournament that runs from July 2-9. The two boxers have been camping at the University of Botswana and leave for Jakarta tomorrow.They are Botswana's representatives in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isles of Man in September.

Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) public relations officer, Willoughby Kemoen believes the President's Cup presents the boxers with an opportunity to gauge their strength ahead of the September Games. Host Indonesia has lined up a strong seven-man team for the tournament. Asian Games silver medallist, Santosh Kumar (64kg) and South Asian Games champion, Chhote Lal Yadav (56kg) will spearhead Indonesia's quest for glory.Meanwhile, cabinet minister, Nonofo Molefhi is new BoBA patron. Molefhi previously served boxing as a chairperson in 1995.
