Local boxers fly high on home soil

Local boxers kicked off their campaign at the ongoing Africa Boxing Cup in emphatic fashion, winning all their opening bouts on Sunday afternoon. Mooketsi Lekgetho (49 kilograms), Tirafalo Seoko (66 kg), Keoagile Rantutu (69 kg) and Tsenang Mohuhutso (81kg) were all victorious in the continental cup which Botswana hosts.

Lekgetho defeated Mozambican, Juliano Maquina 17-13, while Seoko and Rantutu saw off their Zimbabwean opponents Milton Moyo and Guzanani Huni. Seoko outclassed Moyo 21-6 and Rantutu beat Huni 23-8. The referee had to come to the rescue Guinean Mamadou Samba Barry following heavy punches from Tsenang Mohuhutso, halting the heavyweight contest in round two.

Meanwhile, the tournament went ahead despite a low turnout by African countries. Only nine countries, including Botswana (48 boxers) out of the initial 16 that confirmed participation made it. This is a low number, considering that Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) has a membership of 40 countries. Mauritius, Gabon, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Guinea and Botswana are the only countries competing. Ghana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Zambia and Angola all pulled out, citing various reasons. The Local Organising  Committee Chairman,Barulaganyi Mogotsi said a common reason given by many countries was budgetary constraints, while others cited travel logistics, especially transit visas as well as communication breakdown especially with Portuguese and French speaking nations. He said it was disappointing that not many countries showed up as they had expected, but that would not stop the tournament from proceeding as scheduled. "We are disappointed yes, but all is not lost. I am sure the boxers who are here will represent their countries well and give us a good tournament," he said.
