Last ditch meeting averts refs boycott

A last ditch meeting yesterday averted a possible strike by football referees who have threatened to down tools to press their demand for higher pay.

The referees have rejected the Botswana Premier League hike of P650 from P300 per match and want P1,000. But a late evening meeting of the National Referees Commission (NRC) yesterday ended with the match officials withdrawing their boycott threat on condition that talks continue over their demand for P1,000.

According to a member of the NRC, Marvelous Shangare a meeting was previoulsy held on July 13 where the issue of payment was discussed.
