Kofukan tourney set for Sebele

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) Multi-Purpose hall would be turned into a battlefield as junior and senior karatekas compete in this year's last Kofukan Championships this weekend.

Botswana Kofukan Federation (BKF) Public Relations Officer, George Tshikare explained that the championship will be in the form of team events for the three competing regions: North, Central, and South. Also there will be individual categories from the ages of 6-15 for juniors, 16-17 year-old cadets, 18 years, and adults. Tshikare stated that the athletes have been engaged in different disciplines of the Botswana Karate Association (BOKA). He said this weekend's event is the last on the calendar and hopefully athletes will give off their best. "This championship is expected to produce plenty of fire works as most of our national and international karatekas will be demonstrating their superior abilities in karate and to represent their regions," said Tshikare. He attributed a three-month lull in karate activities to the fact that they elected a new committee two months ago and some of the new administrators were still trying to get to grips with "a few things about the sport". He explained that if someone has interest and the potential to lead their association, they make sure that they fit them in.

Tshikare said despite the lapse, things have gone well this year and they hope to close this year's chapter on a high note. He appealed to clubs to bring as many young karatekas as possible because they want to unearth and polish new talent into international stars. He lamented that karatekas retire at an early age. It was only through youth scouting that the sport could develop, he said.
