Kim's Tennis Introduces Senior Category

The annual Kim's Auto tennis tournament will be open to senior players for the first time when it kicks off today. The organisers say the change is meant to celebrate the growth of players that started the event 11 years ago.

The players have now graduated to senior ranks. The coordinator of the competition and Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) technical director, Mthandazo Sibanda said they have decided to include the Over-23 category to make sure the old guards are catered for. In the past, the oldest category was the Under-19. Sibanda said they have decided that their US-based players, especially those who recently represented Botswana in the Davis Cup in Armenia will participate in the event. The players are Bokang Setshogo, Onkabetse Matong and his elder brother, Phenyo. They will play exhibition matches before they fly back to their US colleges. "We are looking at holding those exhibition matches late next week, depending on the players' flight schedules. It is a very old tournament, which has produced all of our current crop of players, and they all love this event and are itching to take part in it as they have been doing through their development years," said Sibanda. He indicated that senior women players like Lesedi Ramocha and Laone Botshoma will also take part in the event. The tournament will have the usual Under-10, Under-12, Under-15, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 boys and girls. Sibanda said the busy tennis schedule will start today till the weekend, due to the high number of players taking part.
