Kgathi, Fani warn against the lure of money

The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Shaw Kgathi has said that athletes should never be motivated by money alone when they represent their country.

He said the government has always rewarded athletes who perform well in international events. This comes in the wake of a wrangle that rocked the Zebras’ preparation for the just ended Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

The Zebras players demanded P100, 000 each, excluding allowances, for being part of the squad that travelled to Gabon. The issue nearly disrupted the team’s preparations with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) saying it does not have enough money to meet the demands.
