SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Shaw Kgathi has raised concern about what he called the under utilisation of sports facilities.

Kgathi said the facilities should be utilised for sport development programmes and the implementation of centres of sport excellence. The minister was speaking during the Botswana National Sport Council (BNSC) annual general meeting held in Selebi-Phikwe over the weekend. He also registered displeasure at the lack of commitment by some sport codes in supporting centres of excellence, despite the wide consultation done at the inception of the programme.

"We cannot allow a situation whereby individuals pursue their own interest at the expense of developing the sport.I therefore wish to call upon the BNSC executive to ensure that all the selected sport codes fully participate in this programme," he said.Kgathi said the growth of sponsorship could only be realised if there was proper financial accountability, which is key to good governance. He pointed out that his ministry has taken a stern position in ensuring that all the agencies have to account for the funds they receive from government. He stated that he has instructed the BNSC executive committee to ensure that all their affiliates are made accountable for funds disbursed to them.
