Kenyans dominate Gaborone Steinmetz marathon

Kenyan runners dominated this year's Steinmetz Marathon on Sunday morning in Gaborone with Luka Chelimo winning the men 40 kilometre race in a clean sweep of the top three positions by the East Africans as compatriot Peris Jepkorir emerged tops in the women category.

Chelimo clocked 2.12.25 to finish the race ahead of countrymen Ezekiel Tarus and Kennet Kipkemoi with 2.16.57 and 2.17.41 respectively."When I was starting it was very difficult for me to breathe, my chest was very tight.I broke away from the others after 25 kilometre, I had adjusted to the weather and it was much easier for me," Chelimo said after winning. He started strongly and led throughout the race with Tarus who set a new personal best yesterday as his strongest challenger.

Before, yesterday, Tarus's best time 2.19. "This is my personal best and I had not expected to run this time. It is a surprise to me, but also encouraging because I am improving," Tarus said.Chelimo started opening up the lead at the 26 kilometre peg. At the time, Lesotho's Thabo Ntlaloe, who eventually finished fifth, was in third place.
