Karate teams bring medal haul

National senior and junior karate teams returned home on Sunday after grabbing 44 medals at the just ended Zone VI championships in Pretoria, South Africa.

The junior team of 30 karatekas won 29 medals - seven gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze while the senior team of 10 karatekas got five gold, four silver and six bronze. Khaya Groth and Raffael Reid performed exceptionally well in the junior category each winning two gold medals in both kata and kumite styles.

The junior team coach George Tshikare said the tournament was tough as compared to the previous ones. However, he commended his boys and girls saying they performed well under the circumstances. Only one karateka from Tshikare's stable failed to bring a medal home.
