Karate mourns referee Phiris death

The Botswana karate fraternity is mourning the death of Sensei Jonathan Phiri who passed away over the weekend following a short illness.

Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) president, David Mathe told Mmegi Sport yesterday that Phiri’s death was a big blow not only to the country but the entire region. He said karate has lost a giant in Phiri. The deceased was BOKA referees commission chairperson, secretary general of Zone VI referees commission, UFAK kumite judge A and World Karate Federation (WKF) kumite judge B.

“We only had three WKF qualified referees in the country and with his passing it means we are now left with two. It is not easy to reach the WKF level hence the low numbers,” Mathe said.
