Junior Cricket League Starts Today

The Under-13 junior cricket league for government primary schools is expected to start today and not tomorrow as earlier announced.

This year, 20 schools are expected to take part compared to 12 last year. The 20 Overs contest will be held at the Gaborone Cricket Club (GCC). Botswana Cricket Association's (BCA) development manager, Girish Ramakrishna, said they started with a small number to pilot the competition.  The plan is to increase the number of schools participating in the league every year until the competition is rolled-out to the whole country. "So far I have identified four schools that may compete in next year's league," he said. He was not willing to name names but stated that one of the schools is as far as 250 kilometres from Gaborone. He explained that they do not have a specific criteria used to determine which schools should take part. The decision is wholly dependent on the school coaches. "The schools we bring on board are schools whose coaches feel they are fit to participate in the league," he said.

Ramakrishna disclosed that they are hampered by lack of cricket grounds for the league. "At present, there are only two proper cricket fields in Gaborone. The one at the GCC is used for almost every cricket occasion. Increasing the number of participating schools is always a struggle as maintaining the field after large tournaments is difficult," he said. Ramakrishna urged the government to help in constructing cricket fields in schools to reduce the burden on the available grounds.
