Judo hosts National Championship

The Botswana Judo Federation (BJF) will host their annual National Championships at the SSKB gymnasium in Mogoditshane tomorrow, where the national team will be selected.

The championship is the highlight of BJF's calendar as players use it to seek entry into the national team. The national team will then go into camp to prepare for the South African International Championships scheduled to take place in June. Also on the calendar are the African Judo Union Junior and Cadet Championships in October and the SCSA Zone VI games in December.

The championship will be divided into three divisions being young players (eight to 10 years), under 15 and 17 cadets, juniors (under 20) and seniors. The competition will give development coaches, Gilberto Portundo Fiel and Kingsley Segokotle a chance to assess the results of their input to the Schools Development programme that has been running since 2009. The federation implemented the 'judo to school programme' in April 2009 with the aim of taking judo to the youth and the main focus being on government institutions, schools and community centres.
