ITTF expert drills locals

The Botswana Table Tennis Federation (BTTA) has invited International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) expert Ahmed Dawlatly to drill local coaches and hold a training camp for the Under-18 players in the country. The training camp started on Wednesday at Babusi Hall in Gaborone with 24 players from around the country participating. About 16 local coaches, mostly from primary schools, will join in for the ITTF Level One coaching course over the weekend.

Addressing the students at the opening ceremony at BNSC conference room, Dawlatly said yesterday that he was pleased to be invited to such a significant project aimed at developing the sport in the country. He said he would try to include all the table tennis basics, adding that the camp has the potential to be one of the successful events on the ITF calendar.  Botswana National Olympics Committee (BNOC) Publicity Secretary Solly Reikeletseng said that table tennis was in the process of rebuilding after 10 years in the doldrums. He also urged the participants to continue developing themselves in table tennis after school. "I know that most of the young forget about the sport as soon as they leave their senior secondary schools but it is important that you continue even after that," he said.

Reikeletseng also said that it was time people stopped giving reasons such as lack of resources and facilities as an excuse for not developing and playing table tennis. "You can even play table tennis on a table and you can make your own bats, too," he said. He advised them to take advantage of this opportunity to be trained by an expert of Dawlatly's calibre.
