The International Olympics Committee (IOC) will honour the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mompati Merafhe with a Sport and Promotion of Olympism Award on June 20. The annual award is given under different categories and themes to individuals or organisations that have contributed tremendously to development of sport in their countries. Merafhe will receive his award through the Botswana National Olympics Committee (BNOC).

BNOC spokesperson Andrew Kamanga said the board decided to submit Merafhe's name because of the contribution that he has made towards the development of sport. Among other things, the minister is credited with the formation of the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) and BNOC. He played a big role in the construction of the National Stadium in Gaborone. Kamanga said after getting the invitation from IOC, they did not have a problem choosing Merafhe as he has an outstanding profile.
He said they are happy that IOC concurred with their decision to honour the minister. "We feel very much honoured. This says a lot about our leaders," he told Mmegi Sport. He explained that IOC had the right to reject the names when they are not satisfied with the submitted profile.
When reached for comment, Merafhe, who is also the MP for Mahalapye West was delighted that his contribution to sport has finally been recognised. He said he has done a lot for sport in Botswana. He thanked BNOC for appreciating his efforts and said it was not often than politicians are acknowledged. He added that the award will boost his profile.
Cuthbert Motsepe was the winner of last year's award in Botswana under the sport and community development category. Motsepe is a former vice president of BNOC and Botswana National Sports Council.
