The number is a sharp increase from the 50 in the last competitions, which Madagascar hosted last year. The tournament is being held at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). Botswana has fielded 12 athletes in the Junior Championships and eight in the Cadat competitions, which were officially launched yesterday.

Initially, 16 countries had confirmed participation but Zambia could not make it due to financial constraints while Sierra Leone's team was involved in an accident on its way to the airport. Botswana Judo Federation (BJF) president Estony Hattingh has attributed the huge turnout to the fact that the events are hosted in Botswana.
