GU holds inaugural awards ceremony

Gaborone United (GU) hosted the first ever awards ceremony at the Cresta Lodge on Sunday afternoon to honour their players as part of the club's 40th anniversary celebrations.

The guest speaker, Horatio Mahloane said at the ceremony that since the soccer club will be celebrating a great achievement, the 2006-2007 team could have done better, at least by winning the national title. GU finished the season in fourth spot with 48 points behind champions ECCO City Greens, Mochudi Centre Chiefs and BDF XI.  After starting the league on a low note, GU recovered admirably this year after the arrival of Zimbabwean trio of Edmore Mufema, Sageby Sandaka and Itayi Gwandu.
"It has been a successful season but not satisfying by our lofty standards. We've a tradition of winning but these days it is different because we are predictable. Our players should know that we want attractive football," said Mahloane, a former GU chairman. He told Mmegi Sport that they no longer enjoy huge support because the fans demand a better performance. "I do not like losing to (Township) Rollers (another Gaborone soccer giant) and I'll never sleep well until we beat Rollers. Even these days I'm afraid to go to the stadium because I'll meet Rollers' people who'll boast," said Mahloane. This season, Rollers humiliated GU twice (3-1 and 3-0) in the league. Mahloane pleaded with the GU family to improve the way the club is run especially financially. He said that the club, by its standard, should not be run on a shoe-string budget.
At the awards ceremony, it was Zimbabwean forward Sandaka who stole the limelight by clinching three titles. The striker took the golden boot award after scoring 14 goals after signing for the Reds during the January transfer window. It was his goals that turned the fortunes of GU around when all seemed lost. Sandaka also got the players' player award and the manager's award. The other awards went to Willie Mantu (player of the season), Bathusi 'Machine' Tautsagae (most disciplined player), Joseph Phetogo (most consistent player), Gothata Samoenza (most improved player) and official Bashi 'Degree' Dlamini got the chairman's award.
In the media category, acting Mmegi sports editor Tshepo Molwane won the print media journalist of the season award while his colleague Kebofhe Mathe went home with the photographer of the season award. Cabino Keitebetse of state-owned Btv and Fondy Gaoforwe of RB 2 won the best TV and radio journalist of the season award respectively.
