Grants for 1st division teams

The new P2 million Pula per season sponsorship for the North and South First Division Leagues will see clubs receiving grants from the Association, according to authorities.

Chairman of the First Division South who is also BFA acting chief executive officer (CEO) Tariq Babitseng told Sport Monitor on Saturday that teams should not expect big prize money at the end of the season, but there will be grants.According to Babitseng the concentration will be on helping teams cover their running costs with the grants. The BFA has proposed that  the  bulk of the money be used as grants to the teams with small percentage going as prizes.Babitseng met with Debswana representatives on Friday where a proposal on how the sponsorship should be broken down was tabled and was forwarded to the Debswana board for consideration.

"I still have got no exact figures of how much will be used on what because I am awaiting response from the Debswana Board. What I can assure everybody including the teams is that Debswana are our new sponsors," Babitseng told Sport Monitor .The league kicked -off on Sunday amid concerns over sponsorship. Babitseng said that the decision to allocate a large chunk of the sponsorship money as grants came after the realisation that teams needed more money for their campaign than for prizes.Babitseng said that giving teams some grants would empower them to prepare better for games hence the quality in the league would improve.
