Good turnout expected at Wharic cycling event

The Gaborone Cycling Club (GCC) has organised the Wharic cycling event scheduled for Sunday with more than 100 local and international riders expected to compete.

The race is divided into two categories - the 54 kilometres and 108 kilometres. The main sponsor for the event is Wharic Construction, which has forked out P30, 000. The race starts from Boatle, through Mankgodi, Mokolodi and back to Boatle.  Nevil Van Zyl is the defending men's champion after winning last year's event in two hours 53 minutes. The women's champion Hetta Nande will also be trying to defend her title. She finished last year's race in three hours eight minutes. According to GCC chairperson, Peter Sikwale there were 100 registered cyclists yesterday and there is an additional six from Swaziland. The registration fee for 108 kms is P130 while club members pay P100.

For those who will participate in the 54 kilometres the registration fee is P100 for non-members and P80 for GCC paid up members. Prizes will be allocated according to categories. There is the Team Challenge Cup and there are supposed to be four cyclists per team. The top three finishers (both men and women) in the 108 kilometres will be rewarded. There is also the boys and girls' category for the Under-19 where the top two teams will be rewarded.
