Golf Veteran Retires

Veteran golfer, Joseph 'Black Horse' Marudu has retired from the national team. The long-serving player said he has reached his peak and it is time to give way for young players. The 57-year- old golfer said he wants to focus on youth development to transfer the expertise that he has to youngsters.

Marudu started playing golf in 1976 in South Africa. He was part of the first Botswana national team that played in the Zone VI tournament held in Gaborone in 1982. He has been in the national team since then. He said a friend first introduced him to golf when he was staying in Zimbabwe.

The Senyawe-born player started as a carrier for white golfers. He said his interest in the game grew in the late 1970s after he had moved to South Africa where he started playing serious golf. He recalls that in those days, the Zimbabwean national team was untouchable but he was the only Motswana who managed to beat a Zimbabwean player.
