GNT are world group independence champions

FRANCISTOWN: Great North Tigers (GNT) are the World Group of Companies Independence Cup champions after defeating Tafic here on Independence Day, walking away with P10,000 and the trophy.

The two teams battled for the championship after they managed to win all the games in the tournament to fight in the finals on Independence Day.

Although many people expected Tafic to win, GNT defied the odds as they won 4-2 in penalty shootouts. The two teams had earlier played to a 2-2 draw. It was GNT, however, who led 2-0 before Tafic rallied from behind to force the match into penalty shootouts.  Motlhokomedi Mombala  put GNT on the lead before  Witness Livingstone made it 2-0. It was then that Machimenyenga came back strongly to force a draw. Wazha Seleka scored TAFIC's first goal and their equaliser was from Obonye Moswate. Since the inception of the World Group of Companies Independence Cup, Ecco City Greens have dominated the competition. However, this time around Ecco City Greens failed to defend their championship, after they were knocked out by the new champions, GNT during the early rounds. In other preliminary games Tonota FC knocked out Sowa United, while Amakhosi  knocked out Sowa Flamingos. Magodi edged out Sladen Eagles while Two Two Five took out Young City.
