Gebrselassie considers politics

NAIROBI: Ethiopian multiple world champion and record holder, Haile Gebrselassie has said he might join politics when he retires from athletics. The global sporting icon said that although he has not yet made up his mind, he is considering a career in politics after retirement.

He was speaking in Nairobi, Kenya at a media briefing for G4S 4teen programme. The other African athletes in the programme are Fanuel Kenosi (Botswana), Obinna Metu (Nigeria), Zodwa Maphanga (South Africa) and Pauline Korikwiang (Kenya). Gebresilassie said that if he joins politics, Ethiopians are likely to accept him since he has served the country well.

He said that he has a responsibility to serve his country in any capacity. He feels that people tend to make mistakes when they join politics by promising to do things that need time in one day. He pointed out that it is important to inform voters that once one is appointed to a position in government, he or she will need time to deliver.
