The much-talked about second edition of the Gaborone City Marathon (GCM) has been cancelled, the marathon organisers announced on their website.

The marathon that was expected to be bigger and better than last year's inaugural edition was hyped towards the end of last year when the organisers announced the second edition would be coming on April 10 this year, bigger and better.

The statement on the website says the cancellation is due to lack of funds.  "The Gaborone City Marathon believes that staging an event of such scale without sound financial and logistical resources would be reckless. The event will be held in 2012 during the same period," reads part of the statement. "We will be in contact with you about next year's preparations. The immediate priority is to secure a long-term partner that will guarantee the quality and standards of Gaborone City Marathon and secure its growth potential. "We are confident that we will be able to have a hugely successful marathon next year and remain committed to staging an absolutely first class event," it continued.
