Botswanas preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games got a timely boost on Monday when G4S security company donated P150, 000 to the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC). The funds are expected to be channelled towards athletes preparations for the July games.

G4S managing director, Moraki Mokgosana said they were excited that as 12,000 elite athletes gather in London, Batswana would be among them. He said they felt honoured to be the first company to come to BNOC’s aid after their plea for financial assistance. Mokgosana observed that it was of paramount importance that government and business communities work together to develop sports. He added that his company has a long history of sponsoring sports locally and internationally. In 2007, local runner, Fanuel Kenosi benefited from the company programme called ‘G4S for teen programme’ targeting young athletes across the continent.

"We have come a long way in supporting sport and the fruit of our toil is beginning to show," he said. Mokgosana wished Botswana the best of luck in London and said he hoped that after celebrating World Athletics Championships winner, Amantle Montsho, Batswana would soon celebrate an Olympic champion. Accepting the donation, BNOC president, Negroes Kgosietsile said they were elated as G4S was the first company to heed their call. "In fact we reckon that BNOC had no choice because there is a clear convergence between us and them, as we both share integrity and team work amongst other values,"he said. Kgosietsile assured Mokgosana that the funds they donated would be used as incentives to adequately prepare athletes for London 2012. As part of their efforts to raise funds for team preparations, the BNOC will host a dinner dubbed the 'Olympic Ball' at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on Saturday.
