SELEBI-PHIKWE: Botswana Football Association (BFA) technical officer, Phillemon Makhwengwe has said FUTURO III, a project meant to develop coaches has registered positive results since its introduction in 2004.

He told Mmegi Sport that the BFA is committed to the development of players and this is why a week-long course for coaches of institutions of higher learning was recently held in Selebi-Phikwe.

The course drew 30 participants and was held from June 14-19. Makhwengwe said the participants underwent training in technical, tactical, physiological and psychological aspects of modern systematic and scientific coaching. "The participants will use these aspects to develop students in their institutions. We played a game against Nico United and managed to lead 2-0 in the first half. It was a clear indication that participants were using what they were taught," he said.  Makhwengwe said teachers are used in development programmes because they are child psychologists. He explained that the association loses talented coaches because of the nature of the teaching profession. He complained that they were not getting enough support from the Ministry of Education in releasing teachers to attend vital courses.
