Gaborone United (GU) were the last local club to take part in the Champions League after winning the 2008-2009 league title.

If we get enough funding, then it is something that we can try out with the kind of players we have," Chiefs' communications manager, Clifford Mogomotsi told Mmegi Sport yesterday. He said that after winning the league, people would definitely expect them to play in the Champions League, but pointed out that it is not because of fear that they have not been taking part in the continental competitions. "We really do not have the financial muscle to do that. I know people would say we have pocketed P1 million, but that is not enough because it covers costs that we incurred during the season," he added.
