Fresh twist to League saga

While Premier League executive committee members were allegedly loaning themselves funds from the league's coffers in October last year, it has emerged that struggling Francistown side TAFIC were denied financial bailout late last year.

This came to light after the dissolution of the entire Botswana Premier League (BPL) executive committee over allegations of abuse of office. Township Rollers chairman, Spencer Mmui, and Extension Gunners boss William Maboane are alleged to have been given cash advances of P12, 000 and P20, 000 respectively in October without authorisation from the board. It has since been confirmed that cash-strapped TAFIC had applied for a loan, but the application was turned down.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) constitution stipulates that the powers to decide on issues of loans or any financial assistance lies with the General Assembly. The constitution (10.5.8) reads: "... to grant loans and or grants in aid of its organ, member club or sub-committee of the league and to fix the terms of repayment thereof subject to approval by the national executive committee."Acting BFA chief executive officer (CEO) Tariq Babitseng confirmed that TAFIC could not get financial assistance in December, but said he was told that the league did not have money then."They asked for money and what I hear is that the league had no money at the time. In the case of TAFIC they borrowed from the Premier League and they had a right to borrow from them," he told Mmegi Sport.TAFIC chairman Humphrey Nawa confirmed that they sought assistance from the league but their bid was rejected.
