Foes of Friends of Football face 'de-registration'

As he inches towards his first 100 days in office, new Botswana Football Association (BFA) president Tebogo Sebego has probably gathered friends and enemies in equal measure. He looks particularly brutal against any foe of 'Friends of Football' who might suffer the same fate as Security Systems and Police XI, observes Staff Writer, MQONDISI DUBE

The fans were naturally expectant as Sebego took the bull by its horns and emerged victorious against David Fani whose star was fast fading. Fani, despite making some notable progress, was deemed the wrong man to drive football forward and the delegates saw the game's future firmly in the hands of a younger Sebego.

From the onset, Sebego waded into a storm over the de-registration of some clubs, particularly Police XI and Security Systems, when there was a feeling that he should have tempered justice with mercy. Notwane and BR Highlanders benefitted from a constitutional clause, which states that clubs, which fail to pay subscription fees lose affiliation. The new president, a lawyer by profession, is a known Notwane supporter.
