First Division League kicks off in September

The start of the First Division League has been pushed from the traditional August kick-off to the first week of September, a move meant to give clubs ample time to prepare for the new campaign, the league's secretary has said.

Sam Keeitire said it is important to give teams especially those who only recently got promoted time to reinforce their squads to withstand the stiff competition when the league starts.

He said that for the standard of football to improve it is important to have tough competition in the second tier. He said newly promoted teams should be able to stay beyond one season in the Premier League, and they can only succeed if they adequately prepare in the First Division. "We have new teams both at the top and at the bottom because while others got promoted some were relegated from the Premier League and they also need to prepare because the playing styles in the two leagues are different," Keeitire said.
