First African World Cup qualifiers to be known this weekend?

The long journey to the 2010 World Cup and African Nations Cup enters a crucial stage in Africa this weekend when the first qualifiers are likely to be known. Staff Writer, TSHEPO MOLWANE previews the five African qualifying groups and predicts the possible outcomes in this weekend's matches

Group A
Gabon vs Cameroon (Libreville)
This game could have been played in June but was postponed because of the untimely death of Gabonese president Omar Bongo. Playing the Gabonese in their backyard has been a nightmare and Togo can attest to this after a 3-0 hammering in June. Hence, Cameroon who have had a bad start to the campaign know what to expect in Libreville.

Surprisingly, the Indomitable Lions are bottom of the group with a single point while their hosts are tops with six. Away games have always proven difficult in the African continent and Cameroon have to be at their best to salvage maximum points. Tottenham Hotspur defender Stephene Bassong who made his debut for the Indomitable Lions in August, is expected to start the game ahead of veteran Rigobert Song. Bassong is one of the highly-rated defenders in the English league. Other stars expected to fight for Cameroon in Libreville are newly-signed Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto'o and Achille Webo of Real Mallorca in Spain. Though Gabon do not have one of the best squads in Africa, they have proven a hard nut to crack in this campaign. In the FIFA rankings released on Wednesday, Gabon are sixth in Africa, three places down from their previous ranking.
