FIFA empowers African scribes

World soccer governing body, FIFA, has said that one of its major projects ahead of the first ever World Cup to be staged on African soil next year is to empower sports journalists in the continent.

Speaking at the end of a five-day FIFA-AFP media workshop in Johannesburg at the weekend, FIFA media officer Alain Leiblang said that since the World Cup is coming to Africa, it is important for African journalists to have a better understanding of the game. He said that his organisation will go all out to ensure that everything is in place to enable journalists to disseminate information to football fans.

"The idea is not to buy journalists but to improve their awareness. I understand that journalists have to report freely and I do not care what you write in your papers. It was not easy to organise this course and at some stage, we nearly cancelled it.
