The female Zebras once again fell prey to Banyana Banyana as they failed to make it to the finals of the Africa Cup on Nations. Mmegi Sport Correspondent KABELO BORANABI takes a closer look at factors that led to the team’s failure to overcome their notorious tormentors

Prior to the game, the team was beaming with confidence as they overcame a raw Mauritius side, 10-0 over two legs, the same score line the female Zebras suffered against Banyana the last time they met. The win gave the team and the nation hope the team was ready to face Banyana. Not taking anything away from the thumping, Mauritius was only making its international debut.

The local team did not play a friendly game before the Banyana game, as their efforts to play Namibia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland hit a snag. While the local girls were huffing and puffing at Lekidi football grounds, Banyana were testing their strength against Africa’s top ranked team, Cameroon in a friendly. Banyana defeated Cameroon 2-0 before playing to a 2-2 draw during the Easter holidays, while our team played a relatively untested Under-17 side.
