Fears at chess federation meeting

The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) hosts an Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) tomorrow at the National Stadium and might once again be hit by a low turn-out because of long-running communication problems. By the time of going to press, most BCF affiliates were not aware of the meeting just like in previous years. The OGM is attended by the BCF affiliates ranging from clubs to schools from all over the country. These meetings are usually tense affairs with heated exchanges but the turn-out is always low because the BCF has a poor communication system with affiliates.

There have been calls in the past for the BCF to improve communication with its members but things have not changed even with a new office. At the OGM, the BCF is expected to present a progress report since the new committee took over last year.

BCF secretary, Kefilwe Miti, said that they had invited paid up clubs only though it has emerged that some that had paid their subscriptions had not seen invites. At the OGM, clubs are likely to question why they pay subscription to the BCF when they do not enjoy any benefits. But Miti said the subscription fee gives members a right to vote during time of elections. BCF does not have any activities for clubs save for the annual championship which charges a fee. The BCF league was played for the first time in 2004 but has since been abandoned without proper explanations. BCF officials refer queries about the matter to the league committee, which in turn point a finger at BCF. The league was abandoned midway in the second round last year with Delta Pawns in the lead. The clubs are expected to seek an explanation during the OGM.
