European Commission sponsors BFA

The European Commission (EC) has donated P350,000 to sponsor the Botswana Under-15 football team.

The money is meant to finance weekend camps for the team between now and April. A total of 35 players will meet at Lekidi Centre for training every Friday under the watchful eye of Serbian coach Veselin Jelusic and other youth coaches Kaizer Kobedi and Happy Motshegare.

At the launch of the sponsorship in Gaborone yesterday, the EC head of operations Marc Thill urged the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to take youth development seriously and educate youngsters about the dangers associated with HIV/AIDS. Thill said that youth development is important for any country which wants to make progress in football. He expressed hope that local youth will take advantage of the weekend camps to improve their skills. "We hope that the funds will be used carefully especially during this time of economic recession. It is also important that we educate these kids about the dangers of HIV/AIDS as it is never too early to raise awareness," he said.
