FRANCISTOWN: The defending champions in the northern rugby league, Eastern Military Garrison Gunners (EMG) of Selebi-Phikwe, started their campaign for the new season in style over the weekend at the Francistown Rugby Club by thrashing Tuskers 54-0.

The Saturday afternoon game was the first league game and the only game played in the northern region. The copper mining town-based EMG Gunners were crowned last year's champions and proceeded to play Hocks in the finals where they lost.

With the big names the Gunners fielded, they beat Tuskers to find one try after another. Tuskers finished last in the north league last season. Their supporters came in large numbers to cheer them on, despite their poor showing.
