ECCO Overcomes BDF XI

ECCO City Greens registered an all-important victory when they beat BDF XI 2-1 in an exciting be Mobile Premier League game played at SSKB on Saturday. It was the third victory for the former national champions.

BDF XI started as the better team on the day, pressing forward early. Striker Thatayotlhe Gaokgorwe nearly gave BDF XI the lead in the ninth minute but his shot missed the target narrowly. It was ECCO who found the back of the net first through Robert Tamba in the 34th minute. Three minutes later, BDF XI goalkeeper, Khalid Niyonzima made a brilliant save to deny Mandlaenkosi Sibanda. Just before half time, Sibanda made no mistake to make it 2-0 for ECCO after he found himself unmarked in the box. The two goals separated the two sides at half time.


After the break, BDF XI coach Stanley Mwaanga made an early substitution, taking out Mosalagae 'City' Gaborone for the hard tackling but exciting  Gaopatwe Seosenyeng. BDF XI pulled one back through Gaokgorwe 10 minutes after the break. Four minutes later, ECCO nearly increased the lead but Sibanda missed a gilt-edged opportunity after a quick one-two with Malepa Bolelang. Sibanda found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but his shot went over the bar. Speaking to Monitor Sport after the game, ECCO coach, Raphael Phiri said that he was happy to get maximum points away from home. He said that it is always difficult to play away and praised his players for following instructions. He revealed that his strategy was to get early goals and then try and close the game and it worked well.
