Drama unfolds as Cape Verde, Bafana reach quarter-finals

The 2013 Orange AFCON entered an even more interesting stage yesterday as teams started their last group games to book places in the quarterfinals.

Drama unfolded in Group A as host South Africa came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Morocco to finish top of the group with five points. But this was nothing compared to debutants Cape Verde who came from a goal behind to beat a much fancied Angola side 2-1 to finish second, tied on points with South Africa to mark another historic feat. All teams in the group entered the final games, played simultaneously, with a chance to make it to the quarterfinal.

A draw or a win was needed to guarantee Bafana Bafana, the 1996 winners a place in the quarterfinals. Things would however turn against their wish at a fully packed Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban as El Adoua put Morocco up on the 10th minute heading in a corner past Itumeleng Khune. South Africa had some tense moments throughout the half and have man of the match Khune to thank as he made some brilliant saves throughout the match.
