Disability Sport To Get More Slots At AAG

The Paralympic Association of Botswana (PASOBO) is confident that they will get additional slots in the All African Games (AAG) squad. So far the organisers have given two places for disabled athletes for the July games in Algeria but PASOBO vice president Kelekganetse Motlamme has said they have been promised more slots.

"We are confident the size of the team will sooner or later be increased. We understand the reason why initially they gave us only two slots. They did not have confirmation from the All Africa Games committee in Algeria as to what categories would be competed for. That information only arrived this week (last week)," said Motlamme. He added that they are not disappointed by the two slots they have been given because they have been assured of an increase. "We are not fighting with the local organisers really. They know what we are capable of, and we know why they could not give us more slots in the team initially. But we are confident our team will be expanded," he said. Botswana would be sending a disabled team to the All African Games for the first time. Motlamme asserted that disability sport can give Botswana more medals if it gets support. He said the visually impaired athletes have better opportunities because their category is divided into three.

There is T11 for the completely blind athletes, T12 for the partially blind and T13 for the next to normal.  Motlamme said this means they can field athletes in the three categories to improve chances of winning medals. He stated that the last time Botswana competed at a disability sport was the Zone VI championships in Namibia where the paralympics team won three gold, two bronze and one silver.
