KUMAKWANE: The 2012 Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 kilometre Desert Race got off to an ecstatic start yesterday morning with motorcycles navigating the rough terrains of one of the toughest races in the ABSA Off Road Championships series.

Starting on pole position in the two-wheel motorcycle category was none other than Botswana's own multiple motor cross champion, Ross Branch. Branch would be seeking to retain the title he won last year and build on his impressive reputation as the country's finest rider by winning the grueling desert race in front of his home fans. Other local wheel riders are Tshepo Kwapa, Lepsey Mosope and Tshepo Mbakite.

In the quads category, Motsumi Lekone, Jabu Johnson, Thato Mabile and Alex Mazaza will look to hoist the country's flag high.
